Miko Marine has delivered 13 sea chest covers to the semi-submersible drilling rig Deepsea Yantai.
Miko Marine AS has recently delivered an order to Yantai CIMC Raffles Yard, via Odfjell Drilling, for 13 sea chest covers for the semi-submersible drilling rig Deepsea Yantai.
The covers were installed at the CCB shipyard in Ågotnes at the end of October.
The purpose was to make watertight seals for one quadrant of the rig at a time. Odfjell Drilling’s maintenance team could then safely inspect and replace all valves inside the sea chests during the rig’s first 5-year special periodical survey (SPS).
The ability to work inside the sea chests without the rig needing to go into dry dock is expected to give the owners cost savings and reduce downtime for the rig. Delivered earlier this year, the sea chest covers, each measuring 900 x 600mm and designed to precisely match the curvature along the rig’s pontoons, were installed by divers while the rig lay alongside the dock at CCB.
After the SPS, the covers will be stored on the rig where they will be available for use during subsequent inspections and maintenance throughout the life time of the rig.
“Odfjell Drilling proves to be innovative in its solution to reduce the costs and downtime usually associated with periodic certification and other maintenance. Although Miko Marine AS has made many types and sizes of sea chest covers, the scope of this order is relatively large and the time frame for design and delivery made the whole job demanding.” says Kåre Anthonsen, Head of Business Development at Miko Marine. He says it was very satisfying to see that the covers fit as they should and gives all credit to his engineers for the job done.
“The fact that we have expertise related to various closure designs and attachment methods enables us to quickly meet the needs of ship and rig operators who want to avoid expensive dry docking. For us, this is a very inspiring experience.” he adds.
Deepsea Yantai is a Global Maritime 4D design built for North Sea conditions and in water depths of up to 1,200 m. It was built at the CIMC Raffles Offshore yard in Yantai, China in 2019 and Odfjell Drilling has operated it in Norwegian waters on behalf of the owner. The 5-year classification has been carried out partly on the field and partly at the CCB yard at Ågotnes by DNV with the aim of renewing the vessel’s certification.
Miko Marine AS is based in Oslo and offers a range of products for underwater blinds as well as for the salvage, offshore and maritime industry in general. The company’s expertise in hull closures has evolved from magnetic plasters, which were launched in 1996. These can be used to quickly seal hull damage and enable a rig or vessel to be safely moved to a shipyard for permanent repair after damage. Among the company’s innovations is the oil draining tool Moskito, which is a device that can make it possible to retrieve bunker fuel and other hydrocarbon cargoes quickly and easily from the tanks of sunken vessels.
